The coffee plants were originally brought to Indonesia at the beginning of the 19th century by the Dutch who wanted to break the Arab coffee monopoly. Within several years the Indonesian coffee dominated the global coffee market. But toward the end of the century disease completely destroyed the crop. Coffee trees were planted again successfully and quickly gained a sizeable of the portion of the global market.
Hulling is a unique method used in the production of Sumatra coffee. It is responsible for a very full bodied coffee, with a concentrated flavor, laced with vegetative nuances and a pungent finish.
